The List of Lists
Pesticide Action Network - UK
November 30th, 2008
This document is a compilation of listings of those pesticides which have been identified as particularly harmful, or on which bans or restrictions have been placed, by various Governments and intergovernmental organisations.
Misleading Consumers
On December 12, 2003 it was announced that a Dow subsidiary, Dow AgroSciences, LLC, would pay a $2 million penalty to the state of New York for intentionally advertising false safety claims on Dursban between 1995 and 2003. The hefty fine was the highest ever in a pesticide case.
New Product Lines No Better
As methyl bromide is being phased out because of its highly toxic effects, Dow proposes sulfuryl fluoride -- another highly problematic and controversial toxic chemical as a replacement. This is not an isolated case, but part of a larger pattern of behavior by Dow.
Poisioning Compost Facilities
The widespread use of a class of very persistent herbicides in turf and agricultural applications is threatening the composting industry. Plants that are grown in compost containing persistent herbicides can be damaged or killed by the herbicide residues, making this compost unmarketable. Confront - Dow AgroSciences' leading persistent herbicide used on lawns, also known as Clopyralid, was found to contaminate compost used by garderners and farming operations.
Spreading Global Contamination
In 2000, the insecticide Dursban, also known as Chlorpyrifos, was banned in the United States for most household uses, but it still remains in use around the world. Dow Chemical, the maker of Dursban, was forced to remove the chemical from household use, but continues to market it widely as a safe chemical for crops and in countries such as India. Several public interest groups in India are contemplating action against the use of chlorpyrifos.
Dow’s Dangerous Pesticides
Dow Chemical and its subsidiaries have produced some of the world’s most notorious pesticides, chemicals that have significant environmental health implications for communities worldwide. A number of these pesticides have been shown to cause serious harm and some have been banned in the United States. Aware of the potential public health risks, Dow continues to produce and market hazardous pesticides in the US and abroad.
